WMS Student Joins Track

Creating Museum Exhibit In Language Arts

In Ms. Christiansen and Ms. Janowski’s 7D Language Arts classroom, students read a historical fiction or biography book that became a research topic to investigate nonfiction. Students wrote a report and prepared a museum exhibit with their choice of multimedia projects ranging from tri-fold presentations to interactive slide shows.  The students then presented their information to visitors of our history museums.


Making Super Hero Element Trading Cards In Science

In Mrs. Gambaiana’s Science class, the students are presenting Super Hero Element Trading Cards that they created to learn about the Periodic Table and the elements. This is part of our Chemistry Unit that will transition into Weather after Spring Break. Below is a picture of some of the Trading Cards.  



The SMP team competed last week at UNO’s Scott Conference Center. The team of Eddie Morrissette, Abe Madson and John Dodge created a project focused on using shipping containers to create cheap, green homes. They created a 3D sketch up model in their presentation which earned them a gold in that category and silvers in 5 other categories.


WMS Student Wins State Geography Bee For The Third Time

On March 31st Brendan Pennington competed in his fourth State Geography Bee on the UNO campus. Brendan won this year’s bee and set a state record for winning three Geo Bees in the state of Nebraska! Brendan will compete in Washington DC in May and will be involved in some fun celebrations for the state of Nebraska’s 150th celebration!


History Superstars at WMS

We have history superstars at WMS! Five WMS students have qualified for the National History Bee in Atlanta in June! Milena Morris and Peter Voller are 7th grade qualifiers and Paul Suder, Virginia Jansen and Brendan Pennington are all 8th grade qualifiers!


WMS Library Reader of the Month

The Westside Middle School library staff selects an outstanding reader each month based on the number of books checked out that month.  The winner each month is awarded a free paperback book.  The March Reader of the Month is Erin Mosier. Congratulations Erin!


Animal Kingdom Students Visit Fontanelle Forest


Students in Westside Middle Schools’ Animal Kingdom classes explored Fontanelle Forest on Friday for a Birding Workshop. After discussing birding adaptations, students watched as a Tufted Titmouse and Downy Woodpecker were tagged. Scientific data was collected on the birds before release back into the forest. A  hike followed with an expert who helped students identify local birds.


WMS Louder Than a Bomb Club

Louder Than a Bomb is a teen poetry festival founded to bring teens together across racial, gang, and socio-economic lines. LTAB is a friendly competition that emphasizes self-expression and community via poetry, oral storytelling, and hip-hop spoken word. It focuses on cooperation, with teams of students working together to write, revise, and rehearse their performances.
